Workshops are designed to provide creative opportunities for anyone who wants to be inspired and learn new skills in a convenient, shorter format. Running throughout the year, workshops vary from one day to several days of intensive study, all with the goal of completing finished, gallery-ready artwork that the student can take home.

Exploring Watercolor Pigments in the Park

Improve your watercolor skills and develop your personal vision in this workshop based on the landscape of Central Park, seasonal still life motifs bloom and the model. Working with loose and controlled watercolor techniques the emphasis will be on massing in layered, transparent washes initially with a gradual buildup of detail through color and tone. The qualities of various pigments will be examined and incorporated to build up areas of transparency and opacity, with emphasis on composition and rhythm. The focus will be on composition, color and issues related to the medium. There will be a brief demonstration for those who are unfamiliar with the medium.

Painting & Mixed Media

Create a project in painting and mixed media while being introduced to the history of Modern and Contemporary Art. Experiment with various methods, materials, and approaches to artmaking. Learn to solve problems creatively and move forward with production. Together we will find a starting point to produce a body of work which will arise from your individual technique and philosophy. The practice of general critique will also be encouraged. In the workshop we will be able to accomplish a project and to establish a methodology for your future work. Open to artists with or without an ongoing project.

Terracotta: Process & Creativity

Push and expand the potential of the clay; proceed toward your very own creation. Use traditional techniques with a contemporary approach in this intensive terracotta immersion with clay sculpture master Weiqing Yuan and National Academy Dean Maurizio Pellegrin. Learn about modeling, carving and sculpting, firing and finishing, and explore the versatility of clay to create your own gallery ready artwork. Students have the choice to produce one piece, a few elements or several pieces. Final pieces will be fired and glazed on Academy premises, and showcased in a culminating short exhibition. Open to all levels.

Unfolding Layers:Monotype Accordion Book Workshop

Workshop Fee: $375 includes materials

In this 3-week intensive immersion course students will explore the art of monotype. Monotypes, the most painterly of printmaking techniques, were used by artists from Degas to Jasper Johns. Students will focus on exploring the interactions of monotype with pastel. Learn to create infinite effects by layering images and patterns to create a series of one-of-a-kind works on paper. Students will experiment with blending techniques, additive and reductive methods, monoprint collage and creating textures with Gelli plates. The finalized edition of prints will be assembled into a gallery ready accordion book and book case. Workshop will culminate with a showing of completed books and cases. Open to all levels.

Watercolor Painting: Mindful Observation

Working from still life you will paint from direct observation, seeing color relationships, form, light, and rhythm in watercolor. Watercolor skills include using transparency and layering to create an overall sense of light and aesthetic unity in the painting. You are encouraged to develop your sensibility through mindful awareness. By adding mindfulness you increase your concentration and enjoyment, with less emphasis on judgement. The teacher fosters growth through individual instruction and a group critique. There will be a brief tutorial-demonstration including mindful breathing techniques for those who wish it. All levels are welcome.
