Out of the Ashcan: Robert Henri and the National Academy
February 7 - May 4, 2008

Consisting of 23 works of art this exhibition is drawn selectively from the museum's collection of work by Robert Henri and his associates, as well as a selection of painting and sculpture by artists who served with Henri on the jury of selection for the Academy's 1907 annual exhibition. Frustration with his fellow jury members over their exclusion of work by some of his closest artist colleagues led Henri to play a major role in the organization of The Eight, a historically important independent exhibition of the art of Henri, John Sloan, George Luks, William Glackens, Everett Shinn, Ernest Lawson, Maurice Prendergast, Arthur B. Davies, held at Macbeth Gallery in New York in February 1908, a hundred years ago this month.
