SIGMUND ABELES, NA

Born in New York, 1934, and raised in North Carolina, painter and graphic artist Sigmund Abeles received a BFA from the University of South Carolina. After moving to New York City in 1956, he studied printmaking at the Brooklyn Museum School and earned an MFA from Columbia University the following year. Mr. Abeles is Professor Emeritus at the University of New Hampshire where he taught for many years. He also teaches at the Art Students League and the National Academy School of Fine Arts. He lives and works in New York City and is represented by the Old Print Shop, New York City Thomas Williams Fine Arts, London; and Cherly Newby Fine Arts, Pawley's Isalnd, SC. He has had recent exhibitions at Thomas Williams Fine Arts, London; Bates College Museum of Art, ME; and his work is included in the collections of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Brooklyn Museum of Art; British Museum, London; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. Mr. Abeles is the recipient of a Florsheim Foundation Grant; Louis Comfort Tiffany Grant for Printmaking; National Council of the Arts; he received an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from Coastal Carolina University; and was the 2004 Hall of fame Honoree, Pastel Society of America.
