ELIZABETH CATLETT, NA

Sculptor and printmaker Elizabeth Catlett was born in Washington, DC, and earned a BS from Howard University School of Art and an MFA from the University of Iowa. She did additional studies with Ossip Zadkine in New York and Francisco Zuniga in Mexico. She has taught at Scripps College, Howard University, Hampton Institute, and was chair of the sculpture department at Escuela Nacional de Arts Plasticas in Mexico. She lives and works in New York City and is represented by both the June Kelly Gallery and the Sragow Gallery, NY. Recent exhibitions include the Cleveland Museum of Art; June Kelly Gallery; Sragow Gallery; Bomani Gallery, San Francisco; Queens College Art Center; Mary Ryan Gallery; DC Moore Gallery; Isobel Neal Gallery, Chicago; and a retrospective exhibition at the Neuberger Museum, Purchase. Her work is included in the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art; High Museum of Art; Museum of African American History, Detroit; Philadelphia Museum of Art; and the National Museum of American Art. She has executed commissions for the Chicago Public Library and the Atlanta City Hall. She is the recipient of a Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr. Art Fund Award; Distinguished Alumni Award for Achievement, Univeristy of Iowa; and Honorary Doctorates from Pratt Institute; Maryland Institute, College of Art; Cornell College; Howard University; and Tulane University.
