Born in Brooklyn, NY, 1935, painter Robert Cottingham studied at Pratt Institute. He lives and works in Newtown, CT, and is represented by the Forum Gallery, NY. He has taught at the Art Center of Design, Los Angeles, and has been artist-in-residence at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation, Colorado Springs, CO, and Center for Creative Youth, Wesleyan University. Recent exhibitions include numerous exhibitions at the Forum Gallery; Galerie Patrice Trigano, Paris, France; Long Beach Museum of Art, CA; Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, CT; 2005 American Academy Invitational Exhibition; Musee d'Art Moderne et Contemporain, Strasbourg, France; and a print retrospective at the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. He has curated A Fine Line: Drawings by National Academicians and Here's the Thing, both at the National Academy Museum. His work is in the collections of the High Museum of Art; New Britain Museum of American Art; St. Louis Art Museum; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; Art Institute of Chicago; Tate Gallery, London;Yale University Art Gallery; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; National Museum of American Art; and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He is the recipient of a Dieu Donne Lab Grant; NEA Grant; Walter Gropius Fellowship, Huntington Museum of Art, WV; and a residency at the MacDowell Art Colony.
