Born in Philadelphia, PA, 1926, painter and graphic artist Sonia Gechtoff earned a BFA from the Philadelphia Museum School of Art and studied lithography at the California School of Fine Art, San Francisco. She lives and works in New York City and has taught at the California School of Fine Art, New York University, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Adelphi University,and Queens College, and currently teaches master classes at the National Academy School of Fine Arts. She is represented by 871 Fine Arts, San Francisco, CA. Recent exhibitions include the Kraushaar Galleries; M.H. De Young Memorial Museum, San Francisco; numerous shows at the Gruenebaum Gallery; Ferus Gallery, Los Angeles; Poindexter Gallery, NY; Albright College, PA; Cortella Gallery, NY; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Museum of Modern Art; Poindexter Gallery; San Jose Museum; Whitney Museum of American Art; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Her work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Menil Collection; San Jose Museum; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; San Francisco Museum of Art; and the Baltimore Art Museum. She is the recipient of a Ford Foundation Grant; NEA Grant; Florsheim Foundation Grant; several Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grants; and an Adolph & Esther Gottlieb Foundation Grant.
