Born in Chicago, IL, 1926, painter Ellen Lanyon studied at the Courtauld Institute of the University of London, and earned a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA at the University of Iowa. She lives and works in New York City and taught for many years at the Cooper Union. She is represented by the Valerie Carberry Gallery and Printworks, Chicago, IL. Recent exhibitions include Fort Wayne Art Museum; Printworks Galleries, Chicago; Valerie Carberry Gallery, Chicago; Odyssia of Rome & New York; Susan Caldwell Gallery; University of California, Davis; NAME Gallery, Chicago; a retrospective organized by the Krannert Museum, University of Illinois, which traveled to the McNay Museum, Chicago Cultural Center, Stamford Art Museum, and the Ewing Gallery, University of Tennessee; Smithsonian American Art Museum; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Andre Zarre Gallery; and the National Museum for Women in the Arts. Commissions include paintings and murals for the US Department of the Interior, Bicentennial Project; State of Illinois Building, Chicago; Workingman's Cooperative Bank of Boston; State Capitol, Springfield, IL; Riverwalk Gateway Project for the City of Chicago; and the Art in Public Places Project, Miami Beach, FL. She is the recipient of the Logan Prize, Art Institute of Chicago; Fulbright Fellowship; National Endowment for the Arts Grants; and a Yaddo Fellowship.
