Born in Indianapolis, IN, 1930, painter James McGarrell studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, State Academy of Fine Arts, Stuttgart, and earned a BA from Indiana University, and an MA from the University of California, Los Angeles. He lives and works in Newbury, VT, and is represented by the George Adams Gallery, NY. He has taught at Read College, Indiana University, and Washington University School of Fine Arts, St. Louis. Recent exhibitions include the Brattleboro Art Museum; Roswell Art Museum; George Adams Gallery, NY; Heriard-Cimino gallery, New Orleans; Frumkin Gallery, Chicago and NY; Perl's Gallery, Beverly Hills, CA; University of New Mexico; Brigham Young University; Museum of Modern Art; Whitney Museum of American Art; St. Louis Art Museum; and the Galeria C. Bernard, Paris. His work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Santa Barbara Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; Hamburg Museum of Art; and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He is the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, Germany; American Academy of Arts & Letters Award; Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Felowship; and a National Endowment for the Arts Grant.
