Born in Oakland, CA, 1926, painter George Ortman studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts, Berkeley, Atelier 17, NY, Atelier Andre L'Hote, Paris, and the Hans Hofmann School, NY. He lives and works in New York City and Costine, ME. Recent exhibitions include the Mitchel Algos Gallery, NY; Hill Gallery, Birmingham, MI; Cranbrook Academy of Art Museum; Several Whitney Museum of American Art; Carnegie International; Tokyo Biennials; and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. His work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Cleveland Museum of Art; Walker Art Center; Smithsonian Museum of American Art; Los Angeles County Museum; and the National Gallery of Art. He is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant; Ford Foundation Grant; and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
