Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, 1923, painter Miriam Schapiro earned a BA, MA, and MFA from the University of Iowa. She was a leader in the Feminist Art Movement and the Pattern and Decoration Movement and lectures widely throughout the country. She lives and works in East Hampton, NY, and is represented by the Flomenhaft Gallery, NY. Recent exhibitions include a major retrospective at the University of Iowa; Kristen Fredericks, NY; University Galleries, Tampa, FL; American Century, Whitney Museum of American Art; Rutgers University; and the Flomenhaft Gallery, NY. Her work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art; Whitney Museum of American Art; Brooklyn Museum of Art; Hirshhorn Museum; National Gallery of Art; Smithsonian American Art Museum; Milwaukee Art Museum; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Orlando Museum of Art, FL; and museums in Denmark, Israel, and Australia. She is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Grant; Ford Foundation Grant; Guggenheim Fellowship; Rockefeller Foundation Grant; National Women's Caucus for Art Grant; and the Lifetime Achievement Award, College Art Association; and has received Honorary Doctorates from Lawrence University, and the Moore College of Art.
