Born in Philadelphia, PA, 1921, painter Joe Stefanelli studied at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, New School, Art Students League, and the Hans Hofmann School. He lives and works in New York City and is represented by the Barbara von Stechow Gallery, Frankfurt, Germany. He has taught at the University of California, Berkeley; Princeton University; New School; Columbia University; Brooklyn College; and New York University. Recent exhibitions include the Barbara von Stechow Gallery, Germany; Meerbusch Gallery, Dusseldorf, Germany; and the Kohln Art Annual. His work is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art; Art Institute of Chicago; University of California, Berkeley Museum; and the National Archives, Washington, DC. He is the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship; Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant; American Research Center Fellowship, Egypt; and a New York State Council for the Arts.
