Born in Los Angeles, CA, 1938, painter, sculptor, and graphic artist Michelle Stuart studied at the Chouinard Art Institute, CA, and at the New School for Social Research, NY. She lives and works in Amagansett, NY, and in New York City. She is represented by Villani Editions, NY. Recent exhibitions include Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Wadsworth Athenaeum; Guild Hall Museum, NY; Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the Houston Museum of Fine Art. She was featured in Documenta VI, Kassel, Germany; and in American Bienial Pavilions in Seoul, Korea and Cairo, Egypt. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Walker Art Center, MN; and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship; National Endowment for the Arts Grants; New York Foundation for the Arts Grants; and an American Academy in Rome Residency, Italy.
