Born in Ottawa, Canada, 1933, graphic artist Claire Van Vliet emigrated to the United States in 1947. She earned a BA from San Diego State University and an MFA from Claremont College and did printing apprenticeships in Germany and New Jersey. She taught at the Philadelphia College of Art, University of Wisconsin, Madison, and is founder and owner of Janus Press, VT. She lives and works in Newark, VT, and is represented by the Mary Ryan Gallery, NY. Recent exhibitions include the Ottawa School of Art; Bates College; Wood Art Gallery, VT; Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery, University of the Arts, Philadelphia; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Library of Congress; Marlboro College of Art; Mid-America Arts Alliance; Cleveland Museum of Art; tate Gallery, London; and the Boyle Arts Festival, Ireland. She is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Art; Cleveland Museum of Art; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Montreal Museum of Art; The Tate Gallery, London; Smithsonian Institution; North Dakota Museum of Art; and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. She is the recipient of an Ingram-Merrill Grant; John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship; Ballinglen Fellowship; and received Honorary Doctorates from the University of the Arts and from San Diego State University.
