At the National Academy School of Fine Arts, students have a unique opportunity to work in studios with natural light under the instruction of a highly qualified faculty in a small class environment. In addition to our many varied classes, we offer a variety of workshops, lectures, master critiques, studio and museum visits. Children and teens art classes are offered throughout the school-year and during summer.
A crucial component of the school programs are the student exhibitions. A Mid-Year Student Exhibition is held in the school after the first semester. Prizes from this show are awarded to students whose work is selected by a jury. The highlight of the school year is the Year-End Juried Student Exhibition held in the National Academy Museum. Prizes are awarded at a special ceremony at the exhibition reception. Class exhibitions are installed by students in the student lounge during the year.
The school is offering a new program leading to a Diploma in Fine Arts. The broad-based curriculum, including drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking, will be chosen by the student in collaboration with an artist mentor, based on the applicant’s skills and goals. Students will work toward a final solo exhibition in the National Academy Museum. For more information on applying to the program click here.
The Studio System
At the heart of the school program is the studio experience, where students often work from the model and also from antique casts and still life. Full-time classes meet five days a week in three-hour sessions. Instructors attend full-time classes two days a week to give instruction and criticism. The instructor is present one day per week for classes that meet three times or less per week. In most classes, instruction is given on an individual basis. Monitors are available to supervise and help when the instructor is absent.
