Tuition for all classes and workshops are listed with their descriptions. Students who register in a class for both summer sessions receive a discounted rate that is reflected in the fee listed. Students enrolled during the previous Academic Year (Session 183) have priority registration privileges. New students must register during open registration. (See registration dates below) Registration is rolling and will continue until the class is filled. REGISTRATION DATES & TIMES Priority Registration begins at 9:00 am, Saturday May 10, 2008 for walk-in registration only and continues at 9:00 am, Monday May 12, 2008 for telephone, mail, fax and walk-in registration. Open Registration begins at 9:00 am, Wednesday May 14, 2008 for all walk-in, telephone, mail, and fax registrations. REGISTRATION PROCEDURES To register for a class, complete a registration form and either fax it, mail it, or present it in person at the school office. Call the school to register by credit card over the phone. Forms are available online at www.nationalacademy.org, in the back of this catalog, or in the school office. Students using a credit card to register by telephone, fax, or mail will be charged a $6.00 service fee. Students may register in-person using a check, money order, or credit card(Visa or MasterCard only). New students are required to pay a non-refundable, one time only registration fee of $50.00 for all classes and workshops, with the exception of Peter Cox's workshop. REFUND POLICY FOR SUMMER CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS: Refund Deadlines for Classes Deadlines to receive 100% Refund: By May 25, 2008 for SS1 By June 22, 2008 for SS2 85% Refund: By June 1, 2008 for SS1 By June 29, 2008 for SS2 75% Refund: Request for refund must be made prior to the second day of the class. No refunds will be made after the second class, unless there is a documented medical excuse. Students must notify the school office in order to receive a refund; ceasing to attend class without notifying the school office does not constitute withdrawal from class. Refunds are made in the same form as payment. Registrations are not transferrable. The one time only $50.00 registration fee is non-refundable. Class Transfers Transfers from one summer session class into another are permitted with a $10.00 fee applied, this fee is waived if the class from which the student is transferring has been cancelled. Students will be allowed to transfer once per session and transfers must occur before the second class. Refund Deadlines for Workshops Request for refund from a workshop must be made two weeks prior to the beginning of the workshop. (August 4 - 8) Students may register for one week only Peter Cox Workshop An Approach to Narrative Painting Monday-Friday, 9am - 4pm All good pictures have an embedded narrative. In this workshop students will be painting two models who are experienced in creating narrative scenes. Students will examine ways to make the picture more exciting by incorporating dramatic lighting and interesting props. Models, costumes, and props will define themselves individually, and as part of a complete and meaningful scene. Starting with a limited color palette, Mr. Cox will introduce students to the Cassel Color Star which connects the dots between primary, secondary, and tertiary color values. He will also introduce texture to the class and the differences and similarities between direct and indirect painting. Mr. Cox will be present each day of this master workshop. Class Code: Gin1830 Workshop Fee: $650 Class Limit: 12 Vincent Baldassano Two Day Intensive Encaustic Workshop May 30th & 31st 9:30am - 4:30pm Encaustic is a painting method in which pigment is mixed with a binder of hot wax and fixed by heat after application. The technique was used prior to oil painting in ancient Egypt and Greece. The class will explore and combine encaustic techniques with new materials such as collage, transfers, printing and other mediums. Let your imagination run wild; this is the medium capable of harnessing it. All levels of experience are welcome. Small oil sketches will be based on direct observation and will investigate color as a compositional force. Both beginning and advanced painters are welcome, though a foundation in drawing is helpful. This class requires a portable easel. Instructor will be present three days of each week. Plants and insects are symbiotic, each cannot exist without the other. Throughout history artists have attempted to capture their relationship. This one week intensive course will continue the timeless journey of discovery through careful rendering from observation. For example: how does light fall on a dragonfly's wing or how does a beetle sit on a leaf? Each student will experiment with a variety of materials from pencil to colored pencils to watercolor. The object lesson is to learn to render, compose and fully realize the color, form and light of these intricate magnificent beings. All skill levels are welcome. The instructor is present each day. Students will explore the density and transparency of light and color through careful observation from life. Color creates magic in any work of art, and this course will teach each student how. Emphasis will be placed on a thorough understanding of the body's underlying geometry and anatomical structure. Week long poses will be set up to allow the student the time to think through problems in order to develop a fully realized drawing. Beginning with the creation of the image and ending with the final embellishments, students learn the technique favored by the ancient artists of Pompeii, the Renaissance masters Michelangelo and Raphael, and the Baroque master, Tiepolo. Students will learn to prepare the painting support, grind pigments, make a cartoon ready for transfer and paint an image. Methods of embellishments such as relief, polishing, gilding and secco painting will be discussed. The instructor is present each day. An Academic Atelier approach is for students interested in pursuing art intensively and constructively. The studio will be divided in groups with beginning students working on the basics of figure drawing and the fundamentals of oil painting; more advanced students will work on figure painting, portraiture, color composition and design. Within this framework students will be taught a direct approach beginning with broad strokes, blocking masses of form, value and tones. The emphasis will be on direct observation and using sensations of light as the foundation for composing an image. Working outdoors and in the studio the class will investigate structures of color and strive for an overall sense of space and weight, paying special attention to the rhythms of details against masses. We will learn to lay out a palette and mix color, and explore such techniques as wet-into-wet, dry brush, and resists. The emphasis will be on the direct observation of still lifes, and possibly models, and looking for an overall sense of space and light. The goal will be to find personal means of capturing vital impressions of the observed world. There are no prerequisites for the class, though prior experience with drawing is helpful.
