School Exhibitions

As one of America's oldest art schools, the Academy's School of Fine Arts was formed in 1825, by young artists who wanted to form an association that responded to the real needs of artists as a place for exhibition and for study. Many of America's major artists including Paul Cadmus, William Merritt Chase, Arshile Gorky, Winslow Homer, Lee Krasner, Ben Shahn, and Raphael Soyer received their basic art instruction at the National Academy of Design's School of Fine Arts.

The Year-End Student Exhibition is one of New York City's most refreshing and surprising group exhibitions. Over $30,000 dollars are awarded as prizes to jury selected student participants. Three additional Travel Prizes are given to three-year certificate student winners. All works are available for purchase. Inquiries may be made at the National Academy School of Fine Arts located at 5 East 89th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues, New York City, NY 10128.

PURPOSE OF THE JURIED EXHIBITION:
The School Committee has designated the end of year student show as a juried event to be held in the National Academy Museum. To assure that the exhibition is representative of work done in the school, the jury consists of faculty members, School Committee members, and National Academicians. The rules for entry to the exhibition have been carefully conceived by the School Committee to encourage the students to experiment with various media and subject matter. Faculty members work with each student to choose an entry in as many categories as permissible. Work must be endorsed by the faculty member on the submission form for each work (one form per work). No work completed at another institution will be accepted (for more details please see page 2, rule #3).

SALE OF WORKS:
We encourage students to offer their works for sale. Students list a price on the submission form if they wish to sell their work. If no price is listed the school will assume the student does not wish to sell the work. The school will process all sales and will retain 20% of the selling price, with 80% going to the student. On the night of the preview party works will be discounted 20%; therefore, students will retain 70% of the selling price, and the Academy will take 10%.

RULES FOR SUBMISSION:
1. Any student registered in a class for at least one session during 2007 summer classes and workshops and the 183 session (September 2007 through May 2008) may submit up to three works in a medium (drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, or watercolor. The three works submitted must be in different subject categories (landscape, figure, still life, etc…). Students may not submit more than three works in any one medium, regardless of the number of instructors taken. For example: a student taking two painting classes, whether with the same or different instructors, may only submit three paintings. The three paintings must be different subject categories, for example oil abstract, oil figure, and oil still-life.

2. A completed submission form must accompany all work.

3. Work executed at another institution is not acceptable. All submitted work must have been executed under the supervision of the class instructor, whether or not it was executed in class or outside of the studio as a homework assignment, it must have been critiqued by an instructor. The class instructor must review all work before submission and endorse the work by signing the appropriate section of the submission form.

4. The following rules for entries must be followed: a. No wet paintings b. Paintings should be on a stretcher. c. Drawings and prints should be mounted on board or foam. d. Charcoal or pastels should be sprayed.

ACCEPTANCE INTO JURIED EXHIBITION:
The School Office will post the results of the jury by Thursday April 24, 2008. Those who have been juried into the show will leave the work ready to hang in the Museum. If work is not ready to hang it must be brought back to the School ready to hang on Friday, April 25 by 5 p.m.

PICK-UP DATES & TIMES:
All students must pick-up their work-or make arrangements to have it picked up-Thursday, April 24 after 12:00pm from the second floor museum galleries if they have not been juried into the show or if they need to prepare their accepted work for hanging.

AFTER THE YEAR END SHOW: Students may pick up their work from the student lounge from 9:00am - 7:00pm on Thursday, May 15, and from 9:00am - 5:00pm on Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17.

Due to a lack of space, the school cannot store any work. A written release must be presented if a student designates a representative to pick up their work. The School will not be held responsible for any unclaimed work.
