The National Academy Diploma Program is a self-directed, atelier-style learning experience designed for the serious art student to support their personal creative journey. Using portfolio development, mentoring, individual critique and solo exhibition, the Diploma Program is ideal for the student who wants a personalized, one-on-one, intensive apprenticeship. The Academy’s celebrated faculty play an integral role in planning and structuring program elements with student goals in mind.

Broad-based curriculum offerings include drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking with a focus on mastering technique and developing professional studio practices. Students can also participate in a variety of workshops, career-development seminars and museum and gallery visits that take advantage of the rich array of cultural resources available in New York City. Exposure to a variety of artistic disciplines, interaction with curators, conservators and working studio artists round out this unique learning experience. Traveling scholarship competitions, teaching assistantships with faculty and internships are available as well.

Students are selected through a portfolio review and are paired with a mentor based on skill and desired goals.

“The Diploma Program is unique because it is designed by each student artist. In the end, you create a body of work that reflects your own personal vision and interests. I think it really prepares you for your independent studio practice.”

Stephanie – 3rd Year Diploma Program Student

“What I like the most about the program is its flexibility. Being able to choose as many classes as you want without the pressure of required courses, having access to studios outside of class time, working in a small-class environment, and getting the individual attention one needs through the guidance of a mentor are particularly enjoyable aspects of the Diploma Program.”
