The Abstract Impulse: Fifty Years of Abstraction at the National Academy, 1956–2006
The Abstract Impulse: Fifty Years of Abstraction at the National Academy, 1956–2006 details the history of abstraction at the Academy both with regard to its inclusion in the Academy’s annual exhibitions and the election of abstract artists to its membership. The catalogue shows how for many years the Academy was reluctant to exhibit abstract art, causing a rift among its members. Over the last thirty years, however, the place of modern art at the institution has changed dramatically and abstraction, in all its incarnations, is now fully embraced. Additionally, each work in the exhibition has an extended entry in the catalogue.

Luminist Horizons: The Art and Collection of James A. Suydam
James A. Suydam (1819-1865) was an American landscape painter and art collector who worked during a pivotal time in the country's history. His art and collection provide a fresh perspective on luminism, a landscape aesthetic celebrated for its expressive effects of light and air. This book offers a new look at how the luminist painters of Suydam's circle-including John F. Kensett, Sanford R. Gifford, and Frederic Edwin Church-advanced American art during the Civil War-era.
